The One-Man Flagpole: KQ4DEP Turned Storm Prep Into A Solo Job

Southwest Florida. One operator, one morning, one report worth printing. KQ4DEP finished installing the hinge-lift on his flagpole, added a 4' extension while he was at it -- 20 feet became 24 -- and sent us the verdict.

He named the reason it matters where he lives: storm prep. Southwest Florida does not schedule its weather, and an antenna you can lower alone, on an hour's notice, is a different asset than one that needs a crew and a calendar.
The Physics Of One Person
The tilt base is a lever with the pivot at the bottom, which means the operator never lifts the antenna's full weight -- the hinge carries it, and the person controls it. One bolt out, walk it down. Walk it up, one bolt in. That is the whole procedure, and it is why a job that used to need a second pair of hands stopped needing one.
The four feet he added are not cosmetic, either. John Kraus, W8JK, showed in Antennas that radiation resistance falls with the square of length in wavelengths -- which cuts the other way too: every foot added back pays compound interest, and it pays biggest on the low bands where every antenna is electrically short. Four more feet on a 20-footer is a real move at 80 and 160 meters, not a rounding error.
Put the two together and you get the point of the system: the tilt is how you reach the top of the antenna, and the top of the antenna is where the upgrades happen -- the extension, the 9' DX Whip, the experiments. One gets you up. The other gets you reach.
