The Greyline Residential Flagpole
Prepared for architectural review committees. A permanent, in-ground residential flagpole in aircraft-grade aluminum, engineered to the ASCE 7-10 wind standard.
Construction
| Material | 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, 2-inch outer diameter; the heavy-duty 28-foot model stands on an oversized heavy-duty base |
| Hardware | Stainless steel throughout; 316 marine grade available for coastal homes |
| Finish | Natural aluminum; powder-coat colors available |
| Heights | 12, 16, 20, 24 and 28 feet, plus the heavy-duty 28-foot model for high-wind locations |
| Guy wires | None |
| Optional | Tilt-up base, so the pole can be lowered for maintenance or ahead of a storm |
Wind Ratings, ASCE 7-10
| Height | Flag Flying | Flag Lowered (or No Flag) |
|---|---|---|
| 12 ft | 100 mph | 155 mph |
| 16 ft | 75 mph | 115 mph |
| 20 ft | 60 mph | 90 mph |
| 24 ft | 50 mph | 70 mph |
| 28 ft | 35 mph | 55 mph |
| 28 ft heavy-duty* | about 80 mph | over 90 mph |
The flag is the largest wind load, so the rating is lower while it flies. The U.S. Flag Code calls for lowering the flag in severe weather. *Heavy-duty figures are a preliminary engineering estimate; certified ratings to follow.
For high-wind locations: the heavy-duty 28-foot model carries more than double the wind rating of the standard 28-foot pole with the flag flying, and nearly double with it lowered.
Installation Footprint
One in-ground sleeve at the base, typically 12 to 18 inches in diameter and 36 to 48 inches deep; the heavy-duty model sets in a larger concrete foundation. No guy wires, no anchors and nothing spread across the lawn. Landscaping beyond the base is undisturbed.
