The DXV24 works every band, 160–6M, from a single feedpoint with no radials and no ground system — that is the headline. Why No Radials — and Why It Works

Traditional quarter-wave verticals feed at the current maximum at the base — pushing maximum I²R loss directly through soil. Every ohm of ground resistance sits in series with your radiation resistance, stealing signal before it leaves your yard.

The Greyline VDA is a vertical dipole. It works every band, 160–6M, from a single feedpoint with no radials. Return current flows through the lower element, not through a buried radial field, significantly reducing ground coupling and removing dependency on soil conductivity. On top of full coverage, the geometry approaches 5/8λ on the upper bands for strong low-angle DX radiation, and at 24 feet the added aperture lifts the low bands where it counts.

A note on diameter, because it's widely misread: a thicker pole is not automatically a stronger one. Wind force scales with projected area — the width the wind actually sees — so doubling a pole's diameter roughly doubles the wind load it must survive, before accounting for the extra mass carried at height and the added dynamic fatigue on every gust cycle. The Greyline runs a 2-inch outer diameter precisely because a slim, engineered section sheds wind better than a fat one fights it. Narrower, run correctly, is the stronger answer.

Every Greyline wind rating is derived from ASCE 7-10 structural engineering values — actual geometry, actual math, published methodology. A wind rating without a cited standard is a guess dressed as a spec. Ask any antenna maker which standard they used. If they can't cite one, you have your answer.

The DXV ships as a bare vertical. The DXF flagpole models add USA-made flag kit hardware, the HOA Architectural Brief, and the Property Integrity Letter.

Do I need an ATU — will my radio's internal tuner work?

Yes, an external ATU is required. The VDA presents variable impedance across its operating range — that's how it covers 160–6M from a single feedpoint with no traps and no radials. Most internal tuners won't handle the full impedance range on every band.

An external ATU lives in one of two places, and both are right depending on your run. For a short feedline run, a desktop ATU at the radio is the simpler path — it stays warm and dry indoors and you can hear it tune. For a longer run, a weatherproof remote ATU at the antenna base keeps the match close to the feedpoint; the LDG RT-100 is a low-cost 125W fit for that job. Either way, note that all ATUs carry a reduced power rating for digital modes (FT8, Winlink, JS8Call) due to 100% duty cycle heat loading — check your tuner's digital rating before running full power on those modes. How difficult is installation? How long does it take?

Most operators are on the air in under an hour. Dig a post hole, build the antenna sections (15–30 min), drop it in, run coax, connect the ATU. All stainless hardware comes pre-fastened — no loose hardware to lose in the grass.

Upon receiving the 24’ vertical, I was impressed with the overall quality of the antenna. All parts are made with the finest material and the fit and finish of the antenna is exceptional

I did not get the installation done until the 30th of July and I am having some difficulty tuning until I removed the 1:1 balun I had purchase for it. It appears to load nicely on all bands except 6 meters and 80 meters. This may be an issue with my MFJ 998 tuner. (More to follow on that)

I did notice the latter line to coax black plastic box does not like direct Alabama Sun in late July! It got hot enough to show deformation from the heat!

Charles, thank you for the detailed report -- and there is good news in it,
because both tuning gaps have likely causes and neither one is the antenna.

Six meters first. The 998 is rated 1.8 to 30 MHz, so anything above 30 is
outside its published range -- but in practice these tuners do something up
there. I run a 998RT at the base of my own Greyline and it gets me to roughly
2 or 3 to 1 on 10 and 6. The rig tuner does the rest. My LDG RT 100 does better on 6M, indeed. Not a beautiful match, but not silence either. So
expect compromise up high rather than nothing, and know the ceiling you are
hitting is the tuner's, not the antenna's.

80M is the interesting one, because it should work. I run 80 and 160 on my
own Greylines through that same tuner family without trouble. So if 80 will
not load for you, something is in the path that does not belong. Two suspects,
in order:

First, look for a ground connection that should not be there. The lower
section of this antenna is not a ground leg -- it is half the radiator,
floating and insulated by design. If anything down there has been bonded to a
ground rod, to a mount, or to the mast, you have grounded half your antenna,
and 80 is exactly where you feel it first.

Second, look for transformer baluns in the line. You found this yourself when
removing the 1:1 improved things -- and if there is a 4:1 or 9:1 anywhere in
that path, it is transforming impedance the system never asked it to
transform, handing your tuner a load further from anything it can achieve. This
design chokes common-mode current with ferrites rather than transforming
impedance with a balun. Ferrites yes, transformers no.

Now the part that is ours. A ladder-line-to-coax adapter housing should not
deform in Alabama sun. That is a materials failure, not a customer
problem. A replacement goes out to you at no charge, and the housing material
is under review here so the next operator in a hot climate does not find the
same thing. We've used these for a decade with good reports. Thank you for reporting it -- that is field data we cannot get from Idaho, and it is worth more to us than a quiet five stars. We will investigate and improve this part.
