Start With What Fits. Grow When You Are Ready.

You do not have to buy the big antenna first. A Greyline is built so the antenna you can afford and fit today is the same antenna you upgrade later — every step is a part that threads on, not a replacement. Here is the whole ladder, what each rung buys you, and what the published authorities say about why.

Rung One: The Antenna That Fits Your Lot Today

Pick the height your lot, your covenant, and your budget allow right now. Every one covers 160 through 6 meters with no radials. The taller ones are better on 80 and 40; the shorter ones are stronger in wind and easier to get approved. None of them is a mistake, because none of them is final.

12 feet — townhouse, deck, tight HOA. 155 mph wind rating. Flagpole or bare vertical.

16 feet — the sweet spot for a small yard. 115 mph. Flagpole or vertical.

20 and 24 feet — where 40 meters comes alive. The most common choice, and what the Selection Guide lands most operators on.

28 feet — 80 is workable, 40 is a weapon. Flagpole or vertical.

From the shelfRudy Severns, N6LF, in his published series on vertical ground systems (QEX, ARRL), showed that most of what a conventional vertical loses is lost in the ground beneath it — which is why a vertical dipole with its current maximum lifted off the soil works on a rooftop, a deck, or frozen ground where a radial field cannot. The height you choose changes what you can hear and work; the physics that makes it work at all is the same at twelve feet as at twenty-eight.

Rung Two: The Tilt-Up Base — Buy It First, Not Last

This is the rung people skip and regret. The top of a vertical is the one place you cannot reach from the ground, and every upgrade after this one happens at the top. With a Tilt-Up Base, you loosen four bolts, remove the second one down, and the whole antenna walks to waist height. One person, no ladder, two minutes. It turns every rung above this from a project into an afternoon. $25 off with any antenna, $50 off with a 12-footer or with a 28 and the whip — automatic in the cart. Roof or deck? Every Greyline wind rating is derived from ASCE 7-10, the structural standard for wind loads on buildings and other structures, and the number is published for the bare pole with the flag down. A tilt base is how you get to the flag-down configuration — and to the whip, and to the hardware — without a ladder in weather. The standard tells you what the pole survives; the tilt is how you keep it in the configuration the standard rated.

Rung Three: The Whip — Nine Feet for the Low Bands

When 80 and 40 start to matter more than they did, the 9' DX Whip threads into the top and adds nine feet of radiator exactly where the antenna is electrically shortest. A 20-footer becomes 29 feet. A 28 becomes 37. Two pounds, threads in by hand, comes off in two minutes when a storm is coming. $25 off with any antenna. That is the whole argument for the whip in one sentence: nine feet is a small fraction of a wavelength on 10 meters and a meaningful one on 80, so the same part pays most where you were struggling and least where you were already fine.

Rung Four: The 4-Foot Extension — When the Covenant Loosens

Got approval for more height? The 4' Extension drops in below the top section — lower the antenna, pull the top, insert the extension, replace the top, raise it. Four feet added to a 16-footer is a 25 percent change in length. On 40 meters, that is not a rounding error.

Rung Five: The Feedline You Should Have Bought First

Every rung above is aperture. Aperture fed through tired cable is a strange way to spend money: a long run of small, old coax can eat close to half your power on the high bands before it reaches the antenna, and the same loss flattens the weak signals on receive. From the shelfWalter Maxwell, W2DU, in Reflections, spent a chapter on the fact that feedline loss flatters the SWR reading at the shack: the more the cable absorbs, the friendlier the number looks at the radio, because the reflected power never makes it back to the meter. A good-looking SWR on a long, old run is not reassurance. It is the cable telling you it ate the difference.

The Top: A Skyline You Built Yourself

A 28-footer with the whip on top is a Skyline 37. A 20 with the whip is a Skyline 29. If you climbed the ladder one rung at a time, you got there for the same money as buying it outright, and you learned your lot and your bands along the way. That is the point. Nobody who starts with a 12-footer is stuck with a 12-footer.

Dean Straw, N6BV, in the ARRL Antenna Book, adds the piece most people miss: the ground in front of the antenna, out to many wavelengths, shapes the low-angle lobe as much as the antenna does. Your lot is part of the antenna. Grow into it.
