A Greyline is a non-resonant vertical dipole covering 160 through 6 meters. A wide-range automatic tuner mounted at the feedpoint is what lets one antenna do that. This is the pairing, priced as a system and shipped as separate parcels.

Remote tuner or shack tuner? This is the one decision that matters.

Both kinds do the same electrical job. Where you put it decides what it costs you.

A desktop or shack tuner sits next to your radio, at the far end of the coax. It presents your rig with a comfortable match — your SWR meter looks lovely — but the mismatch is still out there at the antenna, and every reflected watt makes a second trip down the feedline before it gets absorbed. On a long run, or on the higher bands, that is real power turned into heat in your coax rather than signal in the air. Walter Maxwell, W2DU, spent a chapter of Reflections on exactly this: line loss flatters the SWR reading at the shack. The friendlier the number after a hundred feet, the more you should wonder what the cable ate.

A remote tuner mounts at the feedpoint, at the base of the antenna, in a weatherproof box. It matches where the mismatch actually is, so the coax between your radio and the antenna runs at or near 50 ohms for its whole length. Nothing bounces. That is why every Greyline is specified with a remote tuner and why the RT-100 is the one we ship.

The RT-100 is powered and controlled over the same coax that carries your RF, so there is no second cable to bury. One run out, one antenna, 160 through 6 meters. Already own a good desktop tuner? Keep it — it is useful on other antennas and as a backup — but it is not a substitute for the remote unit on a non-resonant vertical.

One thing to check on your coax run: if you have a lightning arrestor in line, it must be the DC-pass type. Most arrestors block DC by design, and a tuner powered over the coax will simply never respond. It is the most common support call we get.

Do I actually need one?

For full 160–6M coverage, yes. The antenna is deliberately non-resonant — that is what gives it the range — and a modern rig's internal tuner gives up around 3:1. Running 100 watts, the RT-100 is the house answer and the one we ship most. Running an amplifier, call 435-200-4902 before you order: the right tuner at 1kW is a different conversation and we will point you to it even when we do not sell it.

Why we stopped selling these as one SKU

Because one SKU means one shipment and one tracking number — and your antenna and your tuner do not leave on the same day. Antennas build to order in weekly batches. Tuners ship from stock. Bundled together, the tuner waits on the antenna, or worse, the whole order gets marked shipped when only half of it moved.

Ordered as separate line items, each part ships when it is ready and each gets its own tracking number. That is our standing rule on every order, and this is us making the cart obey it.

We price to our costs, not to a calendar. When our buying power brings a cost down, the price follows it down; when material goes up, we say so. What you see is what it costs to build it well this season.
