Understanding the DX Trade-Off: Smarter, Not Just Taller

We know the physics: Going too tall or long with an antenna is a trade-off. The fundamental math shows that surpassing the optimal electrical length (often $5/8$ wave) on any band raises the radiation angle higher—which is not ideal for long-haul $\mathbf{DX}$.

Essentially, as the antenna height increases past this $5/8$ wave sweet spot on a given band, you lose the crucial low-angle pattern for global communication. The smart strategy is understanding this trade-off: while the low-angle $\mathbf{DX}$ pattern shifts upward on the higher bands, the lower bands enjoy a significant boost in efficiency and performance, especially for the mid-lower band $\mathbf{DX}$.
