How to Order Your Greyline Performance Antenna System: A Ham’s Checklist for DX Glory
Ready to launch your ham radio game into the ionosphere? Ordering a Greyline Performance Antenna System is your ticket to serious DX, stealthy elegance, and HOA-proof bragging rights. Whether you’re chasing 160-6M signals or just want your XYL to say, “Wow, that’s pretty,” we’ve got you covered. Here’s the fun, foolproof checklist to snag your smart, strong, and oh-so-elegant HF vertical or DX Flagpole antenna. Let’s engineer some excitement!
Step 1: Pick Your Antenna—Height Matters, Hams!
First up, choose your weapon. Our lineup of HF verticals and DX Flagpole antennas are built for Real DX, no guy ropes and NO radials required. Sizes range from a sneaky 12’ to a towering 28’—each one a masterpiece of rugged brilliance. Ask yourself:
“The quality of the precision machined tubing fit tightly—impressive design!” raves RF Engineer Jeff (KN4BDC), who powers his 24’ with 1500W.
-
HOA or XYL Approval Needed? Go for the DX Flagpole Antenna. It’s stealthy, legal, and flies a flag to boot!
-
Band Goals? Go longer for the winter months, shorter in the summers or settle into our 20-24' range for an all around great antenna for all band DXing year round.
-
Power Plans? QRP, 100W or 1500W, these handle it all—no sweat. There are no power limits with Greyline Performance antennas. QRP love the extremely high efficiency (low loss) too.
-
DX or NVIS? You get both: low-angle DX punch and regional reliability. Pass your emergency traffic with ease. Popular with our Emcomm, Mars, Ares, and similar emergency services agencies.
Pro Tip: The 20’-24’ options are the sweet spot for all-band domination.

Check out our FAQ page for performance graphs that’ll make your radio active heart skip a beat. Look at those graphs! Yes, from your backyard too.
Greyline Performance: See the performance graphs of each antenna for gain and angle of radiation vs. the 43' vertical antenna:
Looking closely at the graph you'll notice as the pole increases in height there is an increase in punch or signal penetration and a lower angle of radiation, mainly on the low bands: 40-60-80-160M. On paper, this helps us understand the theory, however, in practicality we do not see much difference between the various heights of 20-24-28' which is a bonus for those in a height limited antenna HOA and CC&R communities. The 43' is simply too long for the higher bands as evidenced by the pattern on 15M shooting to the stars.
Key: *80M-red | 40M-blue | 20M-green | 15M-orange
Impressive results, right? Look, even the 12-16' vertical antenna holds their own, on 80M! Unexpected good news! Notice the 20 and 28' has an even lower angle and punch for deeper DX performance.
Customers report working 160-6M from even our 16' HOA Flagpole Antennas. One reports working from W4 to KL7 on 80M using his 16 footer. Great news for ham radio operators in HOA communities. Yes, this is possible from your QTH too.

Step 2: Gear Up with the Essentials
Every Greyline Antenna comes with the Ground Mount Kit—because we don’t mess around with shaky setups. But let’s talk must-haves for your shack’s new superstar:
-
Feedline Kit: Our custom ladder-line-to-coax magic keeps losses low and signals loud. Included in every antenan box.
-
RF Choke: Five snap-on ferrite beads keep your feedline clean of spurious emissions and squash noise at the radio output like a champ. Included, because we’re nice like that.
-
Flag Kit (Optional): Turn your vertical into an HOA-approved DX Flagpole with premium, Made-in-USA gear. Fly it proud! Included with every Flagpole shipped.

Step 3: Tuner Time—Match It, Work It!
Greyline Antennas are built smart, and by design a remote tuner is required at one end of your coax (base of the antenna or radio shack table top) This will finalize your HF antenna system and takes you from “good” to “whoa.” Here’s the scoop:
-
Power Rating: Barefoot or using an amp? Give yourself a little wiggle room when match your ATU to your rig: 100W, 500W, or 1500W, all good.
-
Impedance Range: A wider range is better for 80-160M on shorter antennas. Tiny ATUs work great with our longer antenna models but good rule of thumb is to consider the larger ATUs with the shorter antennas. It's why we created the 24' Flagpole Antenna. Pro Tip: Auto-tuners make life fast and easy when tuning the amateur radio bands.
-
Digital Modes? Check the tuner’s digital power limits (lower than SSB ratings). It's all about the quality of the components when playing with digital modes.
Real-world win: “My $220 tuner + 24’ flagpole works 160-6M like a dream!” – Happy HOA Ham.
Bill (WJ8B) adds, “I work Africa and Europe with just 60W on FT8!”

Let's Recap:
Checklist for Ordering a Greyline Performance Antenna System
-
Choose your Greyline Antenna: HF Vertical Antenna or HOA DX Flagpole Antenna. Both are vertical dipoles (VDA) by design. This means, no radials are required, for either antennas above, and one is more Stealth than the other. Both are elegant.
- Some of us have height restrictions or requirements. Choose based on your desired antenna height of vertical antenna: 12-16-20-24-28+ feet. Compare them, here.
-
Choosing your ATU (antenna tuner) or Remote Tuner: Your radio likely doesn't tune all bands therefore an outboard ATU is most likely required. This is by design. First consider your power level needs now and in the future. Note: Some ATUs offer 160-10M and others 160-6M. For the 160-10M units, some will also tune the WARC bands and 6M too. Give it a try. Further, notice the impedance range is wider in some tuners which may help you on 80-160M with shorter antenna models. We have recently reported a 16' HOA Flagpole Antenna working Alaska from Kentucky on 80M. The tuners offered on our website tune 160-10M or 160-6M HF radio coverage, most will tune as low as 160M. This includes non Amateur Radio frequency segments such as Emergency Services Agency bands, MARS, and so on.
-
Ground Sleeve Kit: This is included with your antenna purchase (at this time). This is the base mount which includes the entire ground sleeve kit. Most will use this method. Others consider Tilt-Mount, Tower mount, bulk head, etc.
-
Feed-line Kit: This is included with your antenna purchase. Includes everything you need to connect your coax to the antenna system.
-
Flag Kit (if you desire a Flagpole) is included when you purchase a DX Flagpole Antenna version. *You can add a Flag kit to a Greyline HF Vertical Antenna later if you wish.
- RF Choke: This is included in the Feedline kit to address CMC (common mode current).
-
RF Choke Upgrade: Running more than 100 Watts? You may wish to add additional RF Choking. We have 500W and 3500W rated versions available in our Add-On section. Note: A second choke is helpful on the radio end (behind the radio or amplifier) to remove local QRN picked up on the coax along the way back to your radio. This is a popular choice for those wanting every dB possible on TX and RX. This too can be added later, as needed.
-
Coax to Shack: Consider using LMR-400 or better. The Coax length between the radio and the antenna site is inconsequential and does not change the performance of the antenna. There is no need for any "matching coax length" in our system. This is essentially a vertical dipole antenna.
- Note on Bundles: Bundles are meant to direct your thinking towards the complete antenna system. Add each desired system element to your cart separately for the best price. (Antenna, Tuner, Accessories). Remember, accessories on not required as all that is needed is included in the antenna package.
-
All Kits are currently included in any Antenna purchase. This includes the Ground Kit, Feed Kit, RF Choke, and Flag Kit. Again, everything you need to get on the air with Real DX confidence is in the antenna package.
