The Experimental Line | Low-Band Program

Full 2 Inch Tube Verticals, 32 to 44 Feet. Guyed.

The same no-radial OCF vertical dipole that anchors every Greyline, built taller for the bands where height pays most: 160, 80, and 40 meters. Four heights, 32 to 44 feet, each one 2 inch OD tubing the entire way up. No taper, no whip top. That constant diameter gives matched, identical elements, which is exactly what a phased array wants; operators building a 4-Square on up to a 9-Circle array start here. The 9-foot DX Whip still slides into the top of any of them for more height on a single element - and going that tall is at your own risk, past our engineered envelope. The whip-topped architecture we engineer and stand behind is the Skyline series.

Guying Is Required. Not Optional.

Every antenna in the Experimental line, 32 feet and above, REQUIRES guy wires. We do not publish wind ratings at these heights; structural ratings for the tall line are under engineering review. Guying kits: DIY or your favorite vendor. If you cannot guy at your QTH, the free-standing 12-28 foot line and the Skyline series reach substantial heights without guys.

A Word Before You Go Tall

Longer is not always better. The 43-foot vertical of ham folklore radiates at a problematic high angle above 30 meters; below 30 meters it works, with a properly tuned radial field doing half the job. For a real DX pattern on all bands including 20-6 meters, the free-standing 12-28 foot line is the all-band answer. The Experimental line is for the operator who has chosen the low bands on purpose, has the room to guy, and wants the aperture. One modeled example: the 40-footer lands roughly 2-3 dB behind a 66-foot full-size vertical on 80 meters. When 66 feet is not happening at your QTH, this will do the job. Why Experimental

Greyline built its name on free-standing antennas, and that is where we live. This line exists because operators asked for taller, then tested it. It stays a small run for the tinkerers: same materials, same hand-built quality, guyed by you. Your field results shape whether it becomes permanent.
