The Technical Library (The "Smart" Engineering)

The (VDA) Vertical Dipole Antenna Advantage: Physics of Balance Our chosen RF (VDA) design is balanced against itself, not the ground. Unlike traditional verticals that require complex radial fields (and an RF physics PhD.)  the Greyline VDA provides a high-efficiency signal that reaches the horizon without the fuss.

• Smart Design: No radials, no traps, and no coils to burn out. High power confidence for the digital modes.

• 160-6M Coverage: Continuous coverage when paired with an ATU between the radio and the antenna.

Tuner & Feedline Logic To achieve "Smart" performance, a remote automatic tuner (LDG, 4O3A, ICOM, ACOM, Palstar, etc.) should be placed on one end of the feedline or the other (near radio or near antenna). This matches impedance at the feed point, minimizing or eliminating SWR losses, ensuring every watt reaches the ionosphere for Real DX use.

The 5/8λ Advantage For the serious DXer, we offer the 5/8 wave upgrade. While a standard 1/4 wave is an excellent all-around performer for most of our customers in HOA and small-lots, for those with the inspiration and room to do so, the 5/8 wave aperture compresses the radiation pattern closer to the horizon, providing up to 3.5 dBi of gain on your target bands. When you don't have a 70' tower, this is a smart addition without requiring a big amplifier.
