The 40-Foot Experimental DX Vertical
The no-radial OCF vertical dipole that anchors the Greyline line, built to 40 feet for the operator who wants more where height pays most: the low bands. More vertical aperture means a stronger current distribution for 160, 80, and 40 meters. Hand-built in Idaho from double-wall 6061-T6 aluminum with 316 stainless hardware, fed the same way, tuned the same way, 1.8-54 MHz from a single feedpoint. Full 2 Inch Tube, Top to Bottom
What sets the Experimental line apart: this antenna is 2 inch OD tubing the entire way up. No taper, no whip top. That constant diameter gives you matched, identical elements, which is exactly what a phased array wants. Operators building a 4-Square on up to a 9-Circle array start here.
At 40 feet, this antenna stands past the top of the free-standing range: the Skyline series reaches 37 feet with a lightweight whip up top and no guys; the Experimental line continues upward in full 2 inch tube, guyed. The full tube buys you three things. Matched elements for phasing. A sturdier column that takes the 9-foot DX Whip on top of the tube, standing near 50 feet. And a full-diameter conductor top to bottom, which carries RF with slightly lower loss and wider bandwidth. It is subtle, and it is exactly the margin purists build for. One clear word on going that tall: the whip atop an Experimental stands past our engineered envelope. Operators do it, and it is at your own risk. The whip-topped height we engineer and stand behind is the Skyline. The height economics: a 9 to 11.5-foot whip adds reach for $175; each 4-foot section of full 2 inch tube adds it for $100. Both roads phase, both roads are solid OCF vertical dipoles. The choice is yours.
Guying Is Required. Not Optional.
Every antenna in the Experimental line, 32 feet and above, REQUIRES guy wires. We do not publish a wind rating for these heights; structural ratings for the tall line are under engineering review. If you cannot guy at your QTH, choose the free-standing 12-28 foot line or the Skyline series instead. Guying kits: DIY or your favorite vendor.
Why Experimental
Greyline built its name on free-standing antennas. This line is our invitation to the tinkerers: a small run of taller full-tube verticals for operators with the room to guy and the curiosity to report back.
