The Greyline Standard: Technical Specifications
Welcome to the Resource Hub. Here, we peel back the "Elegant" exterior to show you the "Strong and Smart" engineering that makes Greyline the leader in no-radial HF performance.

PIC: 12' Greyline Flagpole Antenna
The Physics of the VDA (Vertical Dipole Antenna)
The "Why" behind the "Smart": Unlike traditional verticals that require complex radial fields that surely suffer from ground loss, if one lacks a PhD in RF physics, Greyline antennas are a true Vertical Dipole Antenna.
-
No Radials Needed: Our off-center fed vertical-dipole design is balanced against itself, not the ground.
-
Efficiency: By getting the RF "current center" higher off the ground, we achieve a lower angle of radiation—crucial for working weak-signal DX.
-
160-6M Coverage: Continuous coverage across the amateur bands when paired with a high-quality ATU or remote tuner.
The Tuner & Feedline Logic
Do I need a tuner at the base? No. Achieving Real DX results by our customer base is 50/50 with the tuner in the shack vs. the remote tuner at the antenna. To achieve "Smart" performance across all bands (160-6M), a remote automatic tuner (like the LDG, ACOM, 4O3A, or ICOM remote ATU series) should be placed at the base of the antenna or use
-
ATU at the antenna side of the coax: Matching the impedance at the antenna feed point eliminates high SWR losses along your coax, ensuring every watt reaches the ionosphere.
-
ATU at the radio side of the coax: This is the most common for our users. Consider using LMR 400, 600, or better (larger) for the lowest losses. Every dB counts.
-
Power Handling: Our antennas and hardware are built to handle the legal limit (or far higher power for our research customers). Your power limit is limited only by the power rating of your chosen ATU.
Wind Loading & Survival is "Smart"
Built for the Storm: Greyline antennas are engineered from certified premium aircraft-grade aluminum.
-
Free-Standing Integrity: Designed to be free-standing (no guy wires) in any environment.
-
Wind Ratings: Our systems are tested to withstand up to 155 MPH winds (depending on height and mounting).
-
Hardware: All bolts and brackets are high-grade stainless steel to prevent galvanic corrosion. For your convenience the hardware is attached and your antenna elements are plastic wrapped to you.
The 5/8λ Advantage (Add 3 dBi of Low-Angle Gain)
Optimizing for the Horizon: For the serious DXer, we offer the 5/8 wave upgrade. While a standard 1/4 wave vertical is a great all-around performer, a 5/8 wave aperture compresses the radiation pattern even closer to the horizon.
-
The Result: Up to 3.5 dBi of gain on your target bands.
-
When to choose it: If your primary goal is working distant stations on 20M, 17M, or 15M, the 5/8 wave configuration is a "Smart" option for you.
