He Would Not Give Up His Flag Light

Denney Bridges, W7MNE, has flown a Greyline DXF-24 in his yard since the autumn of 2023. This past July he decided to add the 9 ft DX Whip and the Tilt-Up Base, which takes a 24-footer to 33 feet and makes it a Skyline 33. There was one problem. The whip wants the top of the pole, and the top of the pole already had a working flag light on it.

Most operators, told they must choose, would take the whip and put the light in a drawer. Denney refused the premise.

Flag flying, light working, whip on top. All three at once, which is the point.

The Photograph That Did Not Exist

Start with what that picture cost. A customer asked us three separate times to see a Greyline flying a flag with the whip installed, in one frame. We could not produce it. Thousands of antennas in the field, an archive full of operator photographs, and not one showed the complete configuration — because nobody had ever thought to ask for it, and no operator happened to shoot it.

Denney has one running the flag, the light, and the whip together. We asked. He went out and took it. That is the photograph above, and it now answers a question we had been failing to answer for years.

Seventy-Seven, And He Raises It Himself

Read his first sentence again: at 77, he has no trouble raising and lowering the antenna by himself. That is the design working exactly as intended. One operator takes the pole down and puts it back up — no ladder, no crew, no lift. Tom, N3EQF, does the same thing on video in fourteen seconds.

Denney simply prefers company for the bolt, and there is no medal for doing it the hard way. That is the second thing the base buys: when you do want a hand, the hand is not being asked for strength or nerve. Someone slides a bolt while you steady the pole, both of you standing on level ground. A ladder cannot be shared that way, and a ladder never gets easier as the years add up.

The Modification: A Rod Through The Light

Here is how he kept both. Denney ran a length of threaded rod up through the flag light itself and coupled it to the base of the whip. The light stays where it has always been, still lit, still doing its job. The whip stands above it, electrically and mechanically where it needs to be. He also relocated his rope cleat lower on the pole to clear the new arrangement, because with a tilt base you can reach the cleat and move it.

We are looking at whether that becomes a product. Denney invented it in his own yard with hardware-store parts, sent us photographs of every joint, and asked for nothing. If a flag-light coupler kit ever ships from Sun Valley, his name goes on the origin story.

What He Did While It Was Down

This is the part every operator should copy.

Wind works fasteners loose. Not violently, not all at once — through thousands of small vibration cycles over seasons, the same way every bolted structure outdoors eventually needs attention. An antenna is a lever arm with real sail area on a windy day, and every joint in it feels that.

The operator with a ladder discovers loose hardware when something fails. The operator with a tilt base walks the pole down on a calm afternoon, works at chest height, adds lock washers and thread locker, and walks it back up. That is the difference between maintenance and repair, and it is worth more than any dB on a spec sheet. If your antenna has been standing more than a season, this is your reminder.

What Nine Feet Buys At The Top

A 24-footer plus the 9 ft whip stands at 33 feet, which is the classic quarter-wave on 40 meters — the height low-band operators have been building toward for a century. The gain does not come from the whip being special. It comes from where those feet sit.

Radiation resistance falls with the square of an antenna's length in wavelengths. That is John Kraus, W8JK, in Antennas, and it is the reason the feet you add at the top pay their largest dividend on the band where the antenna is electrically shortest. Efficiency is Rr divided by Rr plus everything you waste, so raising radiation resistance on the low bands is the whole game down there. Robert J. Zavrel Jr., W7SX, works the aperture side of the same argument in Antenna Physics: An Introduction (ARRL) — effective capture area, not metal, is what the wavefront responds to.

The Build

  • Antenna: Greyline DXF-24 flagpole, standing since October 2023, no radials
  • July 2026 upgrade: Tilt-Up Base plus the 9 ft DX Whip — 33 feet total, the Skyline 33 configuration
  • Feed: Greyline ladder-line to PL-259 line isolator, added with the original antenna
  • The modification: threaded rod carried up through the flag light and coupled to the whip base, flag light retained and working; rope cleat relocated lower to clear
  • Maintenance: lock washers and thread locker on every screw, done at chest height with the pole tilted down

The Two Ends Of Denney's System

The whip goes on top and buys the aperture that 40 meters rewards. The Tilt-Up Base goes at the bottom and is how a 77-year-old reaches the top by himself — to install the whip, to move a cleat, to put thread locker on a screw before the wind finds it. Two ends of one system, and Denney runs both.
