The DXV28 - Maximum Aperture, Nothing to Explain to Anyone

The DXV28 is the tallest vertical Greyline builds. Twenty-eight feet of off-center fed vertical dipole covering 160 through 6 meters from a single feedpoint, with no buried radials and no flagpole hardware. At this height the geometry reaches 5/8-wave on 15 meters, and every band benefits from the added length up to that ceiling. Modeled gain figures are stated on the aperture page with their reference and band. If your lot is open and nobody needs convincing, this is the most antenna we make.

Why the Bare Vertical

The flagpole version exists to satisfy an HOA. If you do not have one to satisfy, the flag is just wind load. The DXV carries the same VDA core, the same aluminum, the same guarantee, and holds its full structural rating permanently, because there is nothing to lower when weather arrives. The Physics

Why No Radials, and Why It Works

A traditional quarter-wave vertical feeds at the current maximum at its base, which pushes maximum resistive loss directly through soil. Every ohm of ground resistance sits in series with radiation resistance, taking signal before it leaves the yard. That is why those antennas ask for dozens of buried wires, and why they never quite deliver what the catalog promised on poor ground.

The Greyline VDA is a vertical dipole. Return current flows through the lower element rather than a buried radial field, which reduces ground coupling and removes the dependency on soil conductivity. That is the whole trick, and it is why a Greyline works on a rooftop, on concrete, on asphalt, and on frozen Alaskan ground where a radial field is not an option at any price.

Before You Install - Run a Noise Audit

The 2-inch footprint is the smallest ground signature of any full-HF antenna. A traditional radial field extends hundreds of feet at 160 meters, running toward every noise source on the property. The VDA goes where you choose. Take a battery-powered AM radio, tune off any broadcast station, walk the property, and find the quietest spot. That is where the pole goes. On receive, six decibels less noise beats six decibels more power every time.

Structural Engineering

One Rating, and It Never Changes

The DXV28 is engineered to ASCE 7-10 and rated at 55 MPH. There is no second number, because there is no flag. On a flagpole antenna the flag is the dominant wind load, which is why federal protocol calls for lowering it in weather and why the flagpole version carries a lower figure with the flag flying. The DXV holds its rating whether you are home or not.

Construction - 6061-T6 Aircraft Aluminum

Outside: 2-inch OD, full length. A uniform profile top to bottom, clean and invisible as an antenna. Inside: the wall graduates where the physics demands it, 0.125 inch through the lower 30 percent where base bending stress peaks, and 0.065 inch through the upper 70 percent where reducing mass at height lowers dynamic wind load. No plastic anywhere. All metal, stainless hardware throughout.

At 28 feet the pole presents 4.67 square feet of wind surface, and the moment arm is at its longest. Every additional square foot of projected area translates directly into greater base bending stress and greater fatigue loading on every gust cycle. The graduated wall is not a cost measure. It is the correct engineering response: maximum material where bending stress peaks, minimum mass where it only adds load.

Every Greyline wind rating is derived from ASCE 7-10 values using actual geometry and published methodology. A wind rating without a cited standard is a guess dressed as a spec. Ask any antenna maker which standard they used. If they cannot name one, you have your answer.

Before You Order, Answered.

Does a tuner come with this?

No. This is the antenna alone. An external antenna tuner is required, because the VDA covers 160-6M from one feedpoint by matching impedance variation across bands, and most radio-internal tuners will not handle the full range on every band.

The tuner can live at the antenna base as a weather-sealed remote unit such as the LDG RT-100, or in the shack as a desktop unit. Plenty of Greyline operators run each way and get excellent results. The deciding factor is usually the length and condition of your feedline run. If you would rather have it handled, the matched bundle ships both together.

One note for digital operators: all ATUs carry a reduced power rating for FT8, Winlink, and JS8Call because of the duty cycle. Check your tuner's digital rating before running full power. The antenna handles the legal limit on every band; the tuner is the only ceiling.

What is the current lead time and availability?

Each antenna is hand-built to order during the current artisan production run. Current lead time is always posted on the Order Status page. Call 435-200-4902 for your actual ship date.

Is 55 MPH enough for my site?

That depends on your ground, and it is worth a phone call rather than a guess. Twenty-eight feet is a long moment arm, and the honest answer for an exposed site is often a shorter pole. The DXV24 is rated 70 MPH, the DXV20 90, and the DXV12 155.

Here is the part most people miss: a shorter pole with the 9' DX Whip on top gives you back the aperture and keeps the higher wind rating. A DXV24 wearing the whip stands taller than a bare DXV28. Add the Tilt-Up Base and you can lay the whole thing down before a storm rather than hoping. Call 435-200-4902 and we will work it out for your site.

Can I mount this on a roof, a deck, or concrete?

Yes, and that is the point of the design. With no radial field required, the antenna does not care what is under it. Ground, rooftop, concrete pad, asphalt, and frozen ground all work. The included ground sleeve kit covers in-ground, tower, roof, deck, and dock mounting, and the Deck and Concrete Tilt Mount handles the no-dig cases.

How difficult is installation, and how long does it take?

Most operators are on the air in under an hour. Set the base, build the sections in 15 to 30 minutes, stand it up, run coax, connect the tuner. All stainless hardware arrives pre-fastened, so there is nothing loose to lose in the grass.

Recieved the antenna in good shape. Checked out the video and manual for assemble. Worked on where the best place to install it. In the process of Ordering support items. ladder antenna and then I got sick. Currently I am on the mend and will keep you updated.
I do have a question regarding in ground laterals that many verticle antenna need. I did not see instructions for ground laterals?
Probably a few more questions, however both the video and manual are great.
