In Roy's Words
“160–6M with the 16' DX Flagpole and SGC-237 Remote Tuner. Excellent solution for HOA community ham radio operation.”
— Roy · KJ7CWQ · 16' DX Flagpole · Phoenix, AZ
Old meets new. Roy's shack — vintage gear, modern antenna.
Greyline 16' DX Flagpole and SGC-237 remote tuner. “Looks pretty!”
SGC-237 and Greyline RF choke elevated at the feedpoint, ready for weatherproofing. “What a bonus this works down to 160M, right?”
Roy KJ7CWQ Writes:
“I purchased the 16' flagpole antenna which is of very good quality and was easy to assemble. I chose to do a concrete foundation and when that was done it was up in no time. Propagation has not been good, but I have made contacts on 40 meters to the Pacific Northwest with my longest to Hawaii. I live near Phoenix, AZ. I am looking forward to better performance when the bands open this winter.
The antenna is 30 feet from my shack and I am feeding it with LMR-400 into an SGC-237 coupler at the base of the antenna. My rig is a Yaesu FT-991A.
In my community, we are restricted to flagpoles no taller than the peak of your house and they must be 10 feet from the property lines. Other than that, no permission required to install it. Now that it is up I had our community manager check it out and he thinks I can go a few feet taller. I ordered the 4' extension kit from Greyline Performance so we will see if that increases performance a bit.”

From Greyline Performance
Roy — the install looks clean from the ground up. Concrete foundation, LMR-400, SGC-237 at the feedpoint, proper weatherproofing. That's the way to do it. The SGC-237 was one of the better remote tuners ever made and you've proven exactly what a good tuner at the base can do with a 16-foot VDA — every band, real SWR numbers, 160 through 6 meters.
The 4' extension kit is a smart move. A few more feet of aperture will tighten those low-band numbers further and push you toward the 5/8λ sweet spot on 10 meters. Looking forward to the winter report. 73 — Jon KL2A
16-Foot HOA Restriction?
Roy's community caps flagpoles at the roofline — a common restriction in large Arizona HOAs. The 16' DXF covers 160 through 6 meters within that limit. No variance required. No special approval. The CC&Rs already permit flagpoles — the antenna is inside the pole.
